Three European Powers That Successfully Colonized North America

Three European nations established enduring colonial footholds in North America:

  1. England (later Great Britain) – Thirteen Atlantic colonies, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay territory, and after 1763, Canada and Florida.
  2. France – New France (Quebec, Great Lakes, Mississippi Valley to Gulf of Mexico), Louisiana, Caribbean islands.
  3. Spain – Florida, Southwest (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California), Mexico, Caribbean, and Pacific coast.

Why These Three Succeeded

  • Sustained state support (charters, naval power, military).
  • Demographic critical mass (settlers, soldiers, missionaries).
  • Economic extraction models (tobacco, sugar, fur, silver, agriculture) that funded persistence.
  • Adaptability—shifting from conquest to trade to settlement as conditions changed.

Other powers (Netherlands, Sweden, Russia, Portugal) had temporary or marginal presences (New Netherland, New Sweden, Russian Alaska, Portuguese claims) but lost or sold them to the big three.
