Story & Legacy

The song narrates a Klondike Gold Rush (1896–99) tale: Sam McCord, George Pratt, and Billy Pratt strike gold, lose it, find love. Horton's driving rhythm and storytelling made it a crossover smash.

It remains a classic of the "historical ballad" genre Horton popularized (alongside "The Battle of New Orleans," "Sink the Bismarck"). Horton died in a car crash two months after its release, aged 35.
