Oil Transport Routes from Alaska's North Slope
The claim that only one trade route exists is incorrect. Multiple pathways move North Slope oil:
- Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) – 800 miles from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez; primary route since 1977. Tankers ship from Valdez to West Coast refineries.
- Arctic Marine Shipping – Ice-class tankers navigate the Beaufort/Chukchi Seas to export directly to Asia or Pacific ports (seasonal, growing with ice retreat).
- Proposed Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline – Would parallel TAPS to move gas to Alberta or Valdez for LNG export.
- Rail & Truck (minor) – Limited volumes to Fairbanks/Anchorage for local refining.
Constraints
- TAPS throughput declined from 2.1M bpd (1988) to ~480k bpd (2023); low flow challenges pipeline integrity.
- Arctic shipping requires icebreakers, high insurance, Polar Code compliance.
- No east-west pipeline to connect with North American grid.
Thus, while TAPS dominates, it is not the sole route.
