Big Spring State Park spans 390 acres in the town of Big Spring, Texas, 40 miles east of Midland and 62 miles east of Odessa. The park features a paved circle path ideal for a scenic drive or jog that culminates at the top of a 200-foot bluff from which the town of Big Spring is visible. The park has picnic tables, restrooms and a rustic pavilion made of limestone collected from within the park that was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934.
Lake Colorado City State Park is in Colorado City, Texas, 72 miles east Midland and 94 miles east of Odessa. The park occupies 500 acres and five miles of shore of Lake Colorado City. Animals that include raccoons, white tailed deer, armadillos and badgers can be found in the park as well as fish species in the lake such as perch, catfish and bass. Visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming and hiking. A fishing license can be obtained through official outlets including bait and sporting goods stores, local Texas Parks and Wildlife offices and online. The park has 11 cabins which may be reserved for overnight stays through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Reservation Center, an RV park with electrical hook-ups, a group picnic pavilion and recreational hall for events.
Monahans Sandhills State Park is in Monahans, Texas, 60 miles west of Midland and 40 miles west of Odessa. The park encompasses only a part of the vast sand dunes that extend into New Mexico where they are called the Mescalero Sands. While most of the dunes are anchored by vegetation, the dunes in Monahans Sandhills Park are constantly changing form and can reach up to 7 feet. The park facilities include a visitors center, campsites with water and electricity, restrooms, and a group dining hall and picnic pavilion. The park also has an 800-acre equestrian center with horse trails that have shaded tie posts and water.
San Angelo State Park is in San Angelo, Texas,100 miles southwest of Midland and 124 miles southwest of Odessa. The park features over 7,000 acres of land and recreational activities including fishing , swimming, bird watching and hunting. Visitors can lodge in the park at one of the campsites, cabins or RV parks. In addition to more than 350 species of birds, the park is home to cows from the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd and bison.
