How to Drive Feather River Scenic Byway

Feather River Scenic Byway follows a 130-mile route on California state highway 70 in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Cutting through the Plumas National Forest, this scenic route offers mountains, canyons, valleys and waterfalls. Activities in the park include fishing, hiking, camping, rafting and wildlife watching. Drive straight through in 3 hours or spend a whole day getting closer to nature.

      Enter the byway 10 miles north of Orville on highway 70. Drive northeast and enter the Plumas National Forest.

      Drive alongside the north fork of Feather River, a designated scenic and wild river. Stop and cast a line to do some fishing while you enjoy the scenic views of deep canyons and waterfalls.

      Use binoculars to search for wildlife as you enjoy the view of wildflower filled meadows, mountainside railways and breathtaking waterfalls. Black bears, bobcats and bald eagles are a few of the animals you can spot living in the forest.

      Stop for a picnic at the Feather Falls Recreation Area on the middle fork of Feather River. Canyon rafting is available for those looking for a little adventure on the river.

      Hike along Feather Falls National Recreation Trail to the majestic Feather Falls. At 640 feet, Feather Falls is the sixth largest waterfall in America.

      Get back on the scenic byway and head east to the Portola Railroad Museum to learn a little railway history.

      Cross Beckwourth Pass at a 5,228-foot elevation. Discovered in 1850, the pass was once used by wagon trains of settlers heading west over the Sierra Nevadas.
