Start near Dunlap at the edge of the Sequoia National Forest and enter the Kings Canyon National Park. Travel east past the camping grounds to Grant Grove. Look for birds and wildlife while you enjoy the scenery.
Marvel at the sequoia trees in Grant Grove. The General Grant Tree and the Robert E. Lee Tree each tower over 250 ft. tall. See the Gamlin Cabin used in the 1890s by park cavalry.
Look down into Kings Canyon carved out by the Kings River. One section of this large canyon rises over 8,000 ft. from the river to the ridge.
Stop to take a walking tour through the Boyden Caverns. Features include the Bat Grotto full of sleeping bats and stalactite formations such as the Upside Down City. Call (559) 736-2708 for operating season and hours as well as admission fees.
Admire the rushing Kings River as you drive eastward. Bring your fishing pole and try to catch a trout while there. Guided whitewater rafting trips are available to take for those feeling adventurous.
Take pictures of the scenery as you take a walk along the trails in the Zumwalt Meadow located on the shore of the Kings River. The picturesque meadow is home to wildflowers, cedars and wildlife.
End your drive eastward along the scenic byway at the turnaround point in Cedar Grove, a U-shaped valley carved out by glaciers. Stop and eat lunch at the Cedar Grove Lodge before leaving the park.
