On September 4, 1957, nine African-American students enrolled at Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Their enrollment was met with violent opposition from white students and mobs, who were supported by the Arkansas National Guard. President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered federal troops to intervene and enforce the students' right to attend school. The Little Rock Nine eventually succeeded in graduating, but their experience was a major turning point in the civil rights movement.
