Where Is Natural Spring Water in Florida?

Natural spring water sources abound in Florida, with the highest concentration in the northern half of the state. Florida contains 320 known springs with a combined discharge of eight billion gallons of water per day---more than any other state in America.
  1. Largest Springs

    • Florida's three largest springs are Spring Creek Springs in Wakulla County, Crystal River Springs in Citrus County and Silver Springs in Marion County. All Florida springs come from the Florida aquifer, a vast underground water resource that provides most of the state's drinking water and provides the base flow for abundant streams and rivers.

    Famous Springs

    • Famous Florida springs include Silver Springs, a popular movie and television production location and home to the renowned glass-bottom boat tours. Weeki Wachee Springs is internationally known for its underwater live mermaid shows.

    Water Quality

    • Spring water is usually crystal clear and of excellent quality. In some springs, the presence of tannic acid turns the water a tea-like color. Tannic acid comes from surface waters that enter the aquifer near a spring, then discharge quickly into the spring without filtering through the underground limestone first.
