Hawaii Weather During the Year

Hawaii is a chain of eight main islands located in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of continental United States of America. These islands are blessed with a warm, humid, breezy and sunny weather throughout the year.
  1. Seasons and Temperatures

    • The strong trade winds from the east keep the temperature and humidity level moderate throughout the year in Hawaii. Hawaii experiences two seasons for the most part: Summer is from April to November, and winter is from November to April. The average temperature at sea level is 29.4 degrees C, or 84.9 degrees F, during the day and 19 degrees C, or 66.2 degrees F, at night during summers. In winters the temperature ranges from 25.6 to 15 degrees C or 78.08 to 59 degrees F. The highest temperature recorded in Hawaii is 100 degrees F (37 degrees C), recorded in 1931 at Pahala, while the lowest temperature recorded in Hawaii is 12 degrees F (-11 degrees C), recorded in 1979 at Mauna Kea.

    Rainfall and Snow

    • North- and east-facing coasts of Hawaii receive more rainfall than the south- and west-facing coasts. Hawaii receives rain during the winter months with an average rainfall of 70 inches across the entire state. Some areas of Hawaii experience heavy rainfall, up to 400 inches a year. During winters, it also snows on the top of Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala.

    Storms

    • Heavy winds and rains are commonly accompanied with heavy storms. This makes many areas of Hawaii very prone to flooding. The ocean surrounding the state experiences many hurricanes and tropical cyclones. However, in the past 63 years only four have made landfall on the islands. Many of the storms pass too close to the islands, resulting in high winds and heavy rains.
