Minnesota Roadside Attractions

Minnesota is located in the Midwestern region of the United States with Canada bordering on the north. Tourists are attracted to the state due to the many natural recreational activities available, including state forests, parks and lakes. Driving through the state can be an enjoyable adventure of finding roadside attractions to visit that are large in size, strange and appealing to all ages.
  1. Jolly Green Giant

    • The 55-foot-tall Jolly Green Giant statue in Blue Earth, Minnesota, was erected on July 6, 1979. The idea for the structure came from a local radio station owner who would interview tourists traveling on Interstate 90. The town decided to erect the statue based on the comments from many tourists that they wanted to see the Green Giant. The statue is open to the public during daylight hours and the admission is free.

    Paul Bunyan and Babe the Ox

    • The city of Bemidji, Minnesota, is the home to the world's largest Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statue. The statue of Paul Bunyan stands 18 feet high and was built in 1937. Paul and his ox stand near the shore of Lake Bemidji as this is the location that claims to be the birthplace of Paul Bunyan. The statue is open to the public during daylight hours and is located next the Visitor and Convention Bureau in Bemidji.

    World's Largest Twine Ball

    • Darwin, Minnesota, is the location of the world's largest ball of twine that was rolled by one man. Francis Johnson started rolling his ball of twine in March of 1950 and continued to work on it for 39 years. The ball is 13 feet in diameter and weighs 17,400 pounds. The twine ball was moved to a special viewing area that includes a museum in 1989 after the death of Johnson. Darwin Twine Ball Museum is open to the public April through September.

    Big Otter

    • The statue of the Big Otter is located in Fergus Falls, seat of Otter Tail County in Minnesota. Otto the Big Otter is 40 feet in length and built by high school students out of metal and concrete. The otter stands in Adams Park but is not a play structure for children.
