Tennessee Roadside Attractions

The state of Tennessee has many tourist attractions easily accessible from Interstate 40 and other major highways that crisscross the state. Among them are a replica of the Greek Parthenon in Nashville, a salt-and-pepper shaker museum in Gatlinburg, and Elvis Presley's Graceland in Memphis.
  1. The Parthenon

    • The Parthenon, located in Nashville's Centennial Park, is open year-round. This full-scale reproduction of the Greek Parthenon in Athens was built in 1897 for the Tennessee Centennial Exposition. An art museum with 63 works of art representing 19th and 20th century artists is on site. Temporary exhibits and shows vary throughout the year. Admission is required to all areas of the Parthenon: adults pay $6 and children aged four to 17 pay $4; seniors 62 and over also pay $4. Children under 4 are admitted free.

    Museum of Salt and Pepper Shakers

    • Over 20,000 salt and pepper shakers are displayed in this museum in Gatlinburg. Guests can view shakers from ancient times as well as modern-day versions. The museum began in 2001 with one woman's collection that had been amassed over a 25-year period. Admission for adults is $3. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Hours of operation each day are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Graceland

    • Graceland, Elvis Presley's mansion, is full of memorabilia about the late singer's career. Highlights include theme rooms, such as the Jungle Room. Presley's cars, including a 1975 Dino Ferrari. are also on display at the Elvis Presley Car Museum. Special events are scheduled around holidays. Admission prices for adults range from $30 for a mansion tour to $69 for the Graceland Elvis Entourage VIP tour, which includes a special backstage pass.

    Forbidden Caverns

    • Forbidden Caverns in Sevierville was a shelter for Eastern Woodland Indians. From the 1920s until 1943 the caverns were used as a hideout to make moonshine. An underground lake creates a river inside the cave, among the calcite formations, onyx, and dripstones. Tours are given between the months of April through November. Admission generally runs around $14 per person.
