The Dr. Increase Mathews House is the oldest building in the area, dating back to 1805. Located in the Putnam Historic District on the Muskingum River, it has been remodeled and enlarged several times throughout the years. In 1970, the house was given to the Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County. Historic rooms and exhibits about the Muskingum River and local military history --- updated and enhanced in 2007 --- are open to visitors. In addition, local glass, pottery and quilts are on display. The home is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer months.

Pottery was the most important industry in Zanesville during the second half of the 19th century. As pioneers settled in the area, the industry developed because of the surrounding area's rich clay deposits and the settlers' need for inexpensive tableware and containers. Stoneware-producing factories, with mostly hand-painted pottery, flourished in the area. Although the industry has subsided over the years, several pottery manufacturers and outlets still fabricate in Zanesville. Hartstone Pottery continues the practice of manufacturing hand-decorated pottery. The Factory Store is open to the public, and free one-hour factory tours are available for both individuals and groups. Tours include watching artisans make the pottery, a lesson on how to decorate and an opportunity to paint your own pottery.
