About 25 miles from Killeen is Belton Lake, a body of water constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake, completed in 1954, is open to the public year-round and offers a range of recreational opportunities such as fishing, swimming and sailing. Around the lake are three marinas where boats can be rented and privately owned boats can be moored. Also at the marinas are facilities to buy general supplies such as snacks, and camping and fishing equipment. There are several camping grounds in the parks surrounding the lake. These are fully developed, with washroom facilities and access to beaches. There are also many hiking, horse riding and biking trails.

An ideal place for fishing trips and hiking, Stillhouse Hollow Lake is just 20 minutes' drive from the heart of Killeen. A large body of water built by the Army Corps of Engineers, the lake is home to four parks, including Dana Peak Park where there are extensive equestrian trails and a fishing dock for shore fishing. There are also campgrounds in Dana Peak Park and Union Grove Park, both of which include basic facilities, such as showers and picnic areas as well as RV facilities.
Stillhouse Park has a marina with a boat ramp to the lake. Across the lake is Chalk Ridge Falls Hiking Trail, with 5 miles of trail through the spectacular landscape surrounding the lake. Along the trail are waterfalls, a suspension bridge and many breathtaking views.

Cooper Lake, situated 10 miles from Killeen in Cooper Lake State Park, offers a wide range of activities, including hiking, fishing and swimming. Ideal for a family day out or impromptu camping trip, the park has camping sites with electricity and hot water and cabins available to rent. For day visitors there are numerous picnic areas, a playground and an abundance of trails, including some for horse riding and biking. Wildlife enthusiasts will be in their element with opportunities to spot many of Cooper Lake's animals, such as raccoons, bald eagles and deer. As well as fishing and swimming, visitors can participate in more active pastimes such as water skiing and canoeing or may relax and watch the sun set from the deck of a boat.
