Beaches in Northern Virginia

Virginia is located in the East Coast of the United States, bordering North Carolina to the south, Maryland to the North, West Virginia to the northwest and Kentucky to the west. The beaches in northern Virginia offer sandy beaches and calm waters ideal for paddle-boats and kayaks. Many of these beaches are located on the shore of rivers such as Colonial Beach in the Potomac River.
  1. Cape Charles Beach

    • Cape Charles Beach is located at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, 10 miles north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The waters at Cape Charles Beach are calm and shallow, making them ideal for children. Mothers are able to relax while their children play in the sand or in the large wading pools of the beach.

      The city of Cape Charles was founded in 1884 and is has one of the largest concentrations of late-Victorian architecture in the East Coast. The town features a small town harbor and it also serves as a terminal for barges that carry cars across the Bay to Norfolk.

    Chippokes Plantation State Park Beach

    • Chippokes Plantation State Park has been a working farm since 1617. It features two miles of beach along the James River, an area well-known for good fishing. There is a campground and three rental cottages on site for visitors to stay overnight and enjoy the grounds.

      Amenities at the park include picnic areas, two playgrounds, trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding, a gift shop and a large swimming pool. Visitors may also tour the formal gardens and the antebellum mansion, with the opportunity to view a sawmill exhibit and a collection of antique forestry equipment at the Farm and Forestry Museum.

      There is a Steam and Gas Engine show each June and a Christmas Open House in December.

    Colonial Beach

    • Colonial Beach is located on Chesapeake Bay in Westmoreland County on Virginia's northern tip. The town is one of the few remaining seaport towns on the shores of the Potomac River, with a location of sandy beaches and tranquil waters.

      The town attracts many water sports enthusiasts, featuring crabbing, fishing, boating, sailing and swimming as some of the most popular activities. The area is of great historical value, Westmoreland County being George Washington's and James Monroe's birthplace and Colonial Beach the childhood town of Robert E. Lee.

      Looking across the river, Maryland is visible, at only five miles distance from the shore.
