Dinosaur Point Hunting Regulations

Dinosaur Point Road is part of the Cottonwood Creek Wildlife Area in Merced County, Calif. Located 20 miles west of Los Banos along Highway 152, the 4,000 acres of habitat is divided into upper and lower units. Dinosaur Point Road is part of the Upper Cottonwood Unit.
  1. California Hunting License

    • A valid California hunting licence is required to take any bird or mammal. A special HIP (Harvest Information Program) stamp must be attached if you plan to hunt birds. The license must be carried at all times.

    Area Permit

    • This is a Level C use area. Permits are not needed except for the opening weekend of the firearm deer season. Hunting on that weekend is by lottery and only winners of permits may hunt.

    Hunting Hours

    • Hunting is allowed from a half hour prior to sunrise to a half hour past sunset. No night hunting is allowed.

    Wild Pig and Deer Hunting

    • Wild pig and deer hunting seasons both run from September to January. An archery opening season precedes the firearms season weekend. Either animal may only be taken with arrows during this time.

    Restrictions

    • Dogs are not allowed for hunting wild pigs. Hunting on horseback is not allowed. Trailers and camping are restricted to the parking lot area.
