Cabo San Lucas is in Baja California Sur, which is found at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. In relation to major U.S. cities, Cabo san Lucas is about 1,000 miles south of San Diego. Its latitude is about 22 degrees, which is 10 degrees below the Tropic of Cancer. The resort area of Cabo San Lucas is about 20 miles to the west of Los Cabos International Airport.
Cabo San Lucas' average temperature is 78 degrees. From October through April, which is the the busiest tourist season, the temperature is about 80 degrees in the day and in the 60s in the evenings. From May through September, when it's warmer, the temperature often will go higher than 100 degrees. Even in the evenings during the warm season, the temperature is rarely cooler than 70 or 80 degrees.
One of the reasons why Cabo San Lucas is a popular tourist destination is because there are enough activities in the area to accommodate people of many different tastes. Some of the things people can do include taking tours on all-terrain vehicles, exploring clear beaches, traveling on boat cruises during dinner and snorkeling. Those who are interested in more adventurous activities can go surfing, rock climbing, hiking, scuba diving and horseback riding.
Cabo San Lucas was founded in the mid-1800s. It was a small village until 1917, when an American fishing company built a floating platform for tuna fishing. Cabo San Lucas remained a small fishing community until 1974, when the Mexican government saw that foreigners were coming to fish and have fun. When the government saw this, it created infrastructure that could support a tourist community.
Like in other places in Mexico, tourists should not drink the water in Cabo San Lucas, but this is not the only thing they should avoid. When eating seafood, it is best to eat in well-established restaurants. Although hole-in-the-wall restaurants mights have some tasty cuisine, there is no way to guarantee that the food will be free of bacteria. Although some have hesitated to visit Cabo San Lucas from fear of contracting swine flu, there have not been any cases reported in this area.
