Fly Fishing in Cabo San Lucas

Los Cabos is located on the southernmost tip of the state of Baja California Sur in Mexico. It is located on both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez and is considered a fly fisherman's paradise because of its location, weather and the wide variety of fish species that these mildly warm waters attract. Great fly fishing opportunities abound throughout the year although there are specific seasons for each species.
  1. Fishing Season

    • Fishing is good throughout the year but each species has its own fishing season when they can most easily be caught. The best fishing is from July through November when fishing seasons for different species overlap.

    Best Fly Fishing Area

    • The best year-round offshore fly fishing area close to Los Cabos is off of the San Jose del cabo shore known as the Gordo banks. This area is located six miles off shore and the area is filled with many different species of resident bottom fish.

    Species and Regulations

    • Dorado, tuna, rooster fish, stripe marlin, blue marlin, wahoo and sail fish are among the most common fish species in Los Cabos. Most fly fishermen catch a variety of different species throughout the day, but according to Mexican regulations only five specimen of a kind can be kept when fly fishing.
