The Yorkshire Dales, which are located in the southern part of Cumbria, also contain a number of high peaks, including Whernside at 736 metres (2,415 ft) and Ingleborough at 723 metres (2,372 ft).
Therefore, the total number of mountains in Cumbria depends on how one defines a "mountain". If a mountain is defined as a peak that rises at least 1,000 feet (305 metres) above sea level, then there are over 300 mountains in Cumbria. However, if a mountain is defined as a peak that rises at least 2,000 feet (609 metres) above sea level, then there are over 100 mountains in Cumbria.
