- Administers elections in North Carolina, including voter registration, early voting, and election day operations. Sets regulations for elections, provides training and assistance to local elections officials, and certifies election results.
As the Official Keeper of State Documents,
- Maintains the official code of state laws, the state Constitution, and other official state documents. Attests to official acts of the governor and other state officials, and maintains the official records of the General Assembly.
As the Regulator of Corporations,
- Grants charters to new corporations, registers corporate filings, and regulates corporate activities in the state. Reviews and approves corporate mergers and acquisitions, and enforces state corporation laws.
As the Custodian of the Great Seal,
- Applies the State Great Seal to official state documents, such as commissions and proclamations.
As the Administrator of the State Ethics Act,
- Enforces the state ethics law, which regulates the ethical behavior of state employees and public officials. Investigates ethics complaints and takes disciplinary action when necessary.
Other Duties
- Manages the state's vital records system, which includes birth, death, and marriage records. Issues certified copies of vital records and maintains the state's vital statistics.
- Provides public records access to citizens and the news media.
- Promotes international trade and economic development by marketing the state to investors and businesses.
