• Limited accessible resources: Mineral deposits exist but are hard to extract; fewer agricultural soils.
• Remoteness: Far from major cities (Denver, Salt Lake City hours away).
• Perceived dangers: Wildfires, wildlife (bears, wolves, mountain lions), isolation.

These factors concentrate population in valleys and foothills rather than high mountains.
