The U.S. has no medieval castles, but the Gilded Age (1870s–1920s) and visionary eccentrics left a legacy of châteauesque mansions, fantasy fortresses, and royal palaces open to the public.

1. Boldt Castle – Heart Island, Thousand Islands, NY
