Why is the Nevada side of Sierra Mountains a desert?

The Nevada side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains is not technically a desert. This region features a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. While it may receive less precipitation than other parts of California, it does not meet the criteria for a desert, which is typically defined as receiving less than 10 inches of precipitation annually.
