Georgia Does Not Border the Caspian Sea — These Transcaucasian Nations Do

Correction: Georgia (the country) has no Caspian Sea coastline. Its western border is the Black Sea.

Transcaucasian / Caspian Littoral States

The five countries with Caspian Sea coastlines are:

  1. Russia (Dagestan, Kalmykia, Astrakhan Oblast)
  2. Kazakhstan (Mangystau, Atyrau regions)
  3. Turkmenistan (Balkan Region)
  4. Iran (Gilan, Mazandaran, Golestan provinces)
  5. Azerbaijan (Absheron Peninsula, Baku)

Georgia's Coast

  • Black Sea: 310 km coastline (Adjara, Guria, Samegrelo, Abkhazia*).
  • Ports: Batumi, Poti, Sukhumi*.

Why It Matters

The Caspian is the world's largest inland water body (371,000 km²) — oil/gas, sturgeon (caviar), shipping, geopolitics (Convention on Legal Status, 2018). Georgia is a transit corridor (Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline, rail) but not a littoral state.

Georgia = Black Sea. Caspian = Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan.
