Volcanoes in the Rocky Mountains and Nearby Ranges

Volcanism in the Rocky Mountains

The Rocky Mountains proper contain volcanic fields and ancient volcanic rocks, but the famous large stratovolcanoes often associated with the region are actually in the adjacent Cascade Range (USA) and Garibaldi Volcanic Belt (Canada).

Notable Nearby Stratovolcanoes (Cascades/Garibaldi)

  • Mount Garibaldi (BC, Canada) – last erupted ~10,000 years ago.
  • Mount Hood (Oregon, USA) – last erupted 1954.
  • Mount Rainier (Washington, USA) – last erupted 1894.
  • Mount Baker (Washington, USA) – last erupted 1975.
  • Mount Shasta (California, USA) – last erupted 1786.

True Rocky Mountain Volcanism

The Rockies feature volcanic fields like the San Juan Volcanic Field (Colorado) and the Yellowstone hotspot track, but not the classic conical stratovolcanoes listed above.
