North America and Asia are separated by the Bering Strait. The Bering Strait is a narrow body of water located between the Seward Peninsula of Alaska in the United States and the Chukchi Peninsula of Russia. The strait is about 85 kilometers (53 miles) wide at its narrowest point and has a maximum depth of about 53 meters (174 feet). The Bering Strait is named after Vitus Bering, a Danish explorer who sailed through the strait in 1728.
