Located in the northern region of Michigan, the city of Cheboygan is near the waters of Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes.   1. Downtown Cheboygan

    • The city of Cheboygan has worked to revitalize the downtown area into an ideal destination for shopping and a location to hold public events. In addition to the stores lining the sidewalks, the downtown area is home to the city's farmer's market and special events including the annual Downtown Cheboygan Summer Street Fair and Music Festival. The street fair features an arts and crafts show, street carnival, children's theater program and an American Idol-inspired talent show.

    Cheboygan Opera House

    • If you're interested in the performing arts, consider a visit to the Cheboygan Opera House. Originally built in 1877, this restored opera house features music concerts, theater productions and art shows. A supporter of arts in education, the city's art council provides numerous opportunities for young people to get involved. The Opera House is home to the Youth Arts Festival as well as the Children's Theatre Series. You can also take dance classes at the facility; genres include ballet, jazz and tap.

    Cheboygan County Historical Museum Complex

    • Be sure to visit the Cheboygan County Historical Museum Complex to learn more about the area's history. Made up of four buildings, the complex features historical artifacts and exhibits. Tour the late19th century jail and sherriff's residence, or explore a Burt Lake log cabin from the mid 1800s. The Spies Heritage Hall houses several exhibits featuring military and railroad artifacts in addition to an old General Store replica. Rose and perennial gardens surround the complex.

    State Parks

    • If spending some time outdoors is your goal, the city is home to two of Michigan's state parks--Aloha State Park and Cheboygan State Park. Both parks contain campgrounds and provide access to a variety of outdoor activities including boating, fishing, swimming, hiking and picnicking. You can also enjoy mountain biking, cross country skiing, hunting and wildlife watching at Cheboygan State Park. Be sure to check with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment to see if you'll need fishing or hunting licenses prior to your park trip.
