Things to Do in St. Johns, Michigan

St. Johns is in central Michigan, about 20 miles north of Lansing and 60 miles northwest of Detroit. North of St. Johns are the Maple Rapids and Maple River State Game Area; to the southeast is Sleepy Hollow State Park. The City of St. Johns and nearby destinations offer activities for families, individuals and groups of all ages.
  1. Clinton County Fairgrounds

    • The Clinton County Fairgrounds is the scene of various events including the Clinton County 4-H Fair. The 4-H Fair, held in late summer, features a livestock sale, tractor pull and draft horse pull. Children enjoy games, a petting zoo and a "discovery tent." The fair is organized to educate the public about farming and animal life and to provide fun and entertainment.

    Michigan Historical Museum

    • The Michigan Historical Museum is a half-hour drive away in Lansing. The museum tells the story of Michigan's history from the American Indian period to European exploration to the Michigan of today. Amid the permanent and special exhibits, interactive audiovisual exhibits bring history to life. Wi-Fi is available throughout the building. Guests may take photos without flash in any area of the museum; videos are prohibited.

    Sleepy Hollow State Park

    • Sleepy Hollow State Park is one of the closest outdoor recreation areas to St Johns. Lake Ovid and the Little Maple River provide miles of waterways for swimming, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking in warmer weather and ice fishing in the midst of winter. During the winter, you can also cross country ski or snowmobile. Mountain biking and horseback riding trails are laid out among the miles of forest as well. Some people prefer to bring out their metal detectors and look for treasure, and others still like to hunt. You can also camp in groups at the rustic group area site, or camp individually or with family at the modern sites. Sleepy Hollow is about 20 minutes by car from St. Johns proper, covering about 12 miles of distance -- you could bike there if you wanted.

    Potter Park Zoo

    • The Potter Park Zoo houses Michigan native species and animals from around the world, including monkeys, lions, tigers and bears. In addition, the zoo hosts educational programs such as "Jungle Love," which discusses how animals "date" and choose mates. Overnight stays at the zoo and summer camps are among the educational programs for youngsters. The zoo supports habitat conservation efforts.
