Things to Do in Kalamzoo, Michigan

Kalamazoo is located in the southwest portion of the state of Michigan. It has a population of over 75,000 and is home to six colleges, including Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College. The city offers plenty to do for both residents and visitors. Shopping, theaters, an art museum, a plane museum, a farmer's market and 36 parks are just a few of the attractions in Kalamazoo.
  1. Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

    • The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts holds over 4,000 works of art including works by Ansel Adams and Andy Warhol. In addition to the permanent display, temporary exhibits sometimes include the works of local students or famous artists such as Picasso and Van Gogh.

      The museum opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closes at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday as well as 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission to the museum and the exhibits is free.

    Kalamazoo Valley Museum

    • The Kalamazoo Valley Museum's exhibits include products that originated in Kalamazoo, a 2,300 year old Egyptian mummy, science and history exhibits. There is also a planetarium and an interactive Challenger Learning Center.

      General admission to the museum is free. The planetarium and some shows have a separate admission fee.

      Museum hours are Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    Kalamazoo Air Zoo

    • The Kalamazoo Air Zoo has over 30 rare aircraft including an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane and an F-14 Tomcat on display. In addition to the planes, the air zoo has indoor activities including an interactive flight simulator, a space shuttle ride, a disc golf course and other rides.

      The air zoo offers free admission, but ride prices vary.

      Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

    Miller Auditorium

    • Located on the campus of Western Michigan University, The Miller Auditorium seats just under 3,500 patrons in three levels of seating: Orchestra, Grand Tier and Balcony. The auditorium offers a wide variety of programs including movies, comedy shows, speaking events and performances by the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. There are also Broadway shows and concert events.

      Ticket prices vary depending on the event and seating area.

    Kalamazoo Farmers' Market

    • The Kalamazoo Farmers' Market is located on Bank Street and is open from the first Saturday in May through the last Saturday in November. Shoppers at the market can find vendors selling fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, baked goods, flowers, plants and an assortment of handmade products.

      The farmers' market is only open on Saturdays in May and November. During the months of June through October it opens on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
