States That Do NOT Border the Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains run from Alabama to Maine. The following 11 states have no Appalachian territory:

• Illinois
• Iowa
• Kansas
• Minnesota
• Missouri
• Nebraska
• North Dakota
• Oklahoma
• South Dakota
• Texas
• Wisconsin

These are primarily Midwest/Great Plains states west of the Mississippi River (except WI, MN which are north). The Appalachians' westernmost extent is in northeastern Mississippi/northwestern Alabama.
