List of Houston Attractions

Houston, the largest city in Texas and the fourth largest city in the United States, is home to a wide variety of tourist destinations and interesting activities. Home to professional sports teams, world class museums and several annual festivals, Houston offers a wide range of attractions for the local and the visitor alike.
  1. Museums

    • The city has several museums ranging from traditional museums such as the 300,000-square-foot Museum of Fine Arts to the more modern, interactive museums such as The Health Museum, an interactive and educational science museum. Other museums include Space Center Houston, which features a behind-the-scenes tram ride trough NASA's Johnson Space Center and the Houston Museum of Natural Science, home to the Cockrell Butterfly Center, a living butterfly exhibit that features hundreds of butterflies in a three-story tall enclosure. Other museums include the City Children's Museum, the Menil Collection and the Contemporary Arts Museum.

    Professional Sports

    • Houston is home to several winning major league sports teams. The Astros, its baseball team, won the World Series in 2006. The MLS soccer team, the Dynamo, won the MLS Cup in 2006 and 2007. The Houston Rockets, the NBA basketball team, won back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. Other major sports teams include the Houston Aeros, the American League Hockey team, and the Texans, the NFL football team. With so many sports teams playing in the city there is almost always a game to attend.

    Zoos and Aquariums

    • The Houston Zoo is home to more than 800 different species and was named one of the top 10 zoos in the United States by "Parents" magazine in 2009. The zoo features 19 different habitats covering a wide variety of natural climates. The Downtown Aquarium features more than 200 species of aquatic life throughout 500,000 gallons of water, separated into themed areas such as "Shipwreck," "Shark Voyage" and "Rainforest."

    Festivals

    • Several seasonal festivals are celebrated in the city throughout the year. These festivals include multicultural festivals such as the Houston International Festival, arts festivals such as the Via Colori Street Painting Festival, the International Jazz Festival and the International Quilt Festival, and film festivals including the Worldfest Houston International Film Festival and the Houston Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. Other festivals include the Hot Sauce Festival, the Children's Festival and the Wings Over Houston Airshow.
