A three or five-day trip to the southern coast of Maine would give you plenty of time to experience several historic sites and quaint harbors. Recommended spots to see are South Berwick, York Village, York Beach and Ogunquit. All offer shopping, and several are beachside towns. York Beach, in particular, offers carnival-like novelties and a Fun-O-Rama arcade that make for a perfect family vacation.
Including the cities of Bangor, Linconville, Camden and Rockport, Penobscot Bay is considered by Fodor's to be one of Maine's most dramatically beautiful regions. Recommended places to visit include the Penobscot Observatory Tower, Penobscot Marine Museum and Farnsworth Art Museum. Vacations around the bay often involve a tour of several of the area's cities, and tours---such as the Windjammer boat tour---through many of the area's prominent locations are common.
First settled in the 17th century, Portland is a very walkable city, and the Western Promenade, Old Port and Arts District are all easily navigable by foot. Trolley tours are also available of the town. Fodor's recommends visitors stop by the Portland Head Light and visit the Broad Arrow Tavern and Fore Street restaurants for the best of the area's fare. Outlying areas, such as Freeport---home of L.L. Bean---may take a car to get to but are well worth the effort.
Acadia National Park is Maine's most visited attraction and vacation spot, reeling in more than 2 million visitors a year. The area's scenic beauty, with cliffs surrounding the bays and quaint towns near Bar and Southwest Harbors, causes people to fall in love with the area. The National Park's Cadillac Mountain is heralded as the first place in the country to see the sun rise.
