Owner and executive chef Shawn Whalen of Bistro Tallulah offers a menu combining American, Spanish and French dishes with elements of Cajun cooking. The bistro offers an extensive selection of starters, including Whalen's signature sweet corn soup, served with salmon relish, as well as the duck confit and scallop salads, which the Albany Times Union highly recommends. The bistro prepares all of its dishes with locally grown ingredients whenever possible and the Times Union notes that the entree serving sizes are more generous than diners may be accustomed to at an upscale bistro. Bistro Tallulah only has 50 seats, so diners should reserve their table well in advance of their visit.
Head chef and co-owner Jason Baker named the Black Watch after the Scottish fighting force that participated in the Battle of Ticonderoga. The Black Watch buys all of its Black Angus beef from a ranch in nearby Greenwich and its bar offers approximately 30 different varieties of Scotch. The restaurant serves a variety of seafood dishes to accompany its signature steaks and the Times Union was particularly impressed with the haddock and lemon shallots. The Black Watch also offers an extensive dessert menu featuring Suzanne Baker's pastry creations.
Frank and Jessica Vollkommer own and operate the Chocolate Mill, a combination bakery and restaurant located in downtown Glens Falls. Frank is a former instructor of The Culinary Institute of America and while his pastries and confections are the Chocolate Mill's main draw, the cafe also offers sandwiches, soups, salads and entrees. The Times Union recommends the pan-seared sea scallops and the short rib stacker sandwich. The Chocolate Mill's cafe is open for breakfast and lunch Sunday through Wednesday and serves dinner Thursday through Saturday.
Joseph Dimanno opened Poopie's in 1954 in what was originally an Italian neighborhood, and the Dimanno family still owns and operates the diner with Joseph's son Jerry at the helm. Poopie's serves traditional luncheonette fare including cheeseburgers, sandwiches and soups. Their signature item is the one-and-a-half burger, a six ounce hamburger Joseph originally served to a diner who couldn't decide whether he wanted one or two burgers. Poopie's is open for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
