How to Locate a Volcano

Volcanoes are as fascinating as they can be dangerous. Many famous volcanoes, like Yellowstone and Mount Saint Helens in the United States or Mount Vesuvius in Italy, are popular tourist locations . Finding the location of volcanoes is simple. The Smithsonian Institution offers the Global Volcanism Program that displays locations, eruption history and current activity of all known volcanoes over the past 10,000 years.

      Go to the Smithsonian Institute's website for the Global Volcanism Program (GVP). This website lists monthly activity reports for any volcanic activity large or small dating back to 1968. The site is a global information clearinghouse for all volcanic activity.

      Select the "Volcanoes of the World" drop-down menu. The "Volcanoes of the World" is located in the red banner near the top of the page. The drop-down banner allows you to select from volcanoes by region, name, eruption date and other selections. Choose "Find a Volcano by Region" to display a world map.

      Click on the region on the map. The site will then display a smaller area. Each red triangle is a volcano in that region. Click on the map again to display all known volcanoes in that region.

      Scroll through the list of volcanoes. Each volcano will be displayed with a picture, name, type, status and location.

      Click on a desired volcano for more information. Each volcano has a brief write-up and gives more information regarding location by supplying longitude and latitude coordinates. The height of the volcano is listed along with the last known eruption date.
