The Forbidden City is a palace complex in Beijing, China, that served as the imperial palace for the Ming and Qing dynasties from the 14th to the early 20th century. It is located in the center of Beijing, and is separated from the outside world by a series of concentric walls and moats. The entire complex consists of over 9,000 rooms, and covers an area of 72 hectares (180 acres). It is one of the largest ancient palaces in the world, and is considered one of the most important cultural monuments in China.
