Tombolo: A Sandy Bridge Between Island and Mainland

A tombolo is a narrow sand/gravel bar connecting an island to the mainland or a larger island. Formed by wave refraction and longshore drift depositing sediment in the island's lee. Common in high-tidal-range coasts (e.g., Maine, Bay of Fundy, St. Ninian's Isle in Shetland).
