Tours of Colca Canyon in Peru

Peru's Colca Canyon is the second-deepest canyon in the world, more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Most tours of the Colca Canyon focus on seeing the majestic Andean condor in its natural habitat. Condor viewing is best from June to September, and the best time to visit the Colca Valley is during the dry season, which is May through November. Travel agencies offer day trips into Colca from Arequipa; these depart very early in the morning and cover a lot of ground. Longer guided tours also are available, and these maintain a more reasonable pace for the thin air at this altitude–16,100 feet at the highest viewpoint. Travelers should consider staying in Arequipa for a couple of days before going to Colca to avoid altitude sickness.
