Where to See Pompeii's Human Statues: From the Ruins to World Museums
The haunting plaster casts of Vesuvius's victims – often called "statues of people" – are among archaeology's most poignant artifacts. Here's where to encounter them.
Primary Locations
1. Pompeii Archaeological Park (Parco Archeologico di Pompei)
- In situ: Several casts remain at discovery spots – Garden of the Fugitives (13 bodies), House of the Cryptoporticus, Villa of the Mysteries.
- On-site museum (Antiquarium): Rotating displays of casts, original artifacts, and new finds from recent excavations (Regio V).
2. National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN)
The world's largest collection of Pompeian artifacts. Key casts include:
- "The Muleteer" / "The Crouching Man"
- Family group from the House of the Golden Bracelet
- Dog cast (contorted in agony)
- Extensive frescoes, mosaics, bronzes, and daily-life objects.
3. Herculaneum Archaeological Park (Parco Archeologico di Ercolano)
Different preservation (pyroclastic surges carbonized wood, preserved skeletons on beach). Fewer casts, but 300+ skeletons from boathouses – a different, skeletal testimony.
International Collections
Significant casts/artifacts also at:
- British Museum (London) – casts, carbonized furniture, famous "Drunken Satyr" bronze.
- Louvre (Paris) – frescoes, mosaics.
- Metropolitan Museum (NYC) – Boscoreale frescoes, silver.
- Getty Villa (Malibu) – replicas and originals in reconstructed Roman villa setting.
Visiting Tips
- Buy Pompeii tickets online (skip 2-hr lines).
- Combine with Herculaneum (smaller, better preserved, 20 min by Circumvesuviana train).
- Visit MANN after Pompeii – context enriches the artifacts.
- Respect the casts: they are human remains, not art. Photography allowed (no flash), but no touching, sitting, or disrespectful poses.
