Honshu (本州, "Main Province") is Japan's largest island, comprising ~60% of the country's land area (227,960 km² / 88,016 sq mi) and housing ~80% of its population (104+ million).

Geography & Climate

Runs northeast–southwest for 1,300 km. Dominated by the Japanese Alps (peaks >3,000 m), including Mount Fuji (3,776 m), Japan's highest and most iconic volcano. Climate ranges from humid continental (north) to humid subtropical (south).

Transportation Backbone

Tokaido Shinkansen (bullet train) connects Tokyo–Osaka in 2.5 hrs. Extensive expressway, rail, and air networks. The Seikan Tunnel links Honshu to Hokkaido; bridges connect to Shikoku and Kyushu.
