Channel Islands in WWII: The Only British Territory Occupied by Nazi Germany
From 30 June 1940 to 9 May 1945, the Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles occupied by Nazi Germany. Key facts:
- Demilitarized by UK in June 1940; Germans landed unopposed.
- Civilian government continued under German oversight; harsh laws imposed.
- Deportations: ~2,000 islanders (including Jews and non-residents) sent to camps in Europe.
- Heavy fortifications built (part of Atlantic Wall) using forced labor (OT workers).
- Liberated on 9 May 1945 (Guernsey/Jerseys), 10 May (Sark)—one day after VE Day.
Occupation museums and bunkers remain major historical sites.
