The Pacific is Earth's largest ocean (165M km²)—and its temperatures span a staggering range.

Surface Temperature Zones

• Equatorial (0°–10°): 27–30°C (81–86°F) year-round. Warm pool drives El Niño/La Niña.
• Subtropical (10°–30°): 20–27°C (68–81°F). Seasonal variation ±3°C.
• Temperate (30°–50°): 10–20°C (50–68°F). Strong seasonal swings.
• Subpolar (50°–65°): 2–10°C (36–50°F).
• Polar (>65°): -2 to 5°C (28–41°F). Sea ice forms at -1.8°C.

Key Drivers

• Solar insolation (latitude)
• Currents: Kuroshio (warm, W. Pacific), California Current (cold, E. Pacific), Humboldt (cold, S. America), East Australian (warm).
• Upwelling: Cold, nutrient-rich deep water rises along eastern boundaries (Peru, California, Chile) → productive fisheries.
• ENSO cycle: El Niño warms eastern equatorial Pacific; La Niña cools it.

Area-weighted mean surface temperature: ~19.5°C (67°F). But "the Pacific temperature" is meaningless without location, depth, and season.
