Geologic Conditions That Could Trigger a Tsunami on the Oregon Coast

The Oregon coast faces several geologic hazards capable of generating tsunamis:

1. Cascadia Subduction Zone

The Juan de Fuca plate subducts beneath the North American plate off Oregon. This zone can produce massive earthquakes that trigger tsunamis.

2. Offshore Faults

Faults such as the Blanco Fracture Zone, Astoria Canyon Fault, and Newport-Stonewall Bank Fault can also generate tsunamis.

3. Underwater Landslides

Submarine canyons and slopes along the coast are prone to landslides, often triggered by earthquakes, which can displace water and create tsunamis.

4. Distant Earthquakes

Tsunamis from faraway quakes, like the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan, can reach Oregon's shores.

5. Volcanic Activity

Though no active volcanoes sit on the coast, Cascade Range eruptions could trigger landslides or displace water, generating tsunamis.
