Most Filipino immigrants to Hawaii became plantation workers. They were recruited en masse by the Hawaiian sugar industry to work on the sugar plantations from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The first group of Filipino immigrants arrived in Hawaii in 1906 and by 1930, there were over 60,000 Filipino immigrants living in the state. They were the largest ethnic group in Hawaii, after the native Hawaiian population.
