Rhode Island's History: From 1636 Colony to 1790 Statehood

The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams and other religious dissenters from Massachusetts Bay. It became the 13th state on May 29, 1790, upon ratifying the U.S. Constitution. Its official name remains "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."
