Which U.S. Coast Has the Most Major Ports?

The East Coast dominates the list of the United States' largest ports. Out of the top 50 ports by volume, 38 are located on the East Coast. The remaining 12 are distributed across the West Coast, the Gulf Coast, and the non-contiguous states of Alaska and Hawaii.

This concentration reflects historical trade patterns, population density, and the proximity to European and transatlantic shipping lanes.
