The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to Asia by sailing west across the Pacific Ocean. He set out from Spain in 1519 with five ships and a crew of about 270 men. After sailing for more than a year, Magellan reached the strait that now bears his name, located at the southern tip of South America. He then led his ships through the strait and into the Pacific Ocean. After sailing for more than three months without sighting land, Magellan and his crew became very low on food and water. Finally, on March 6, 1521, they reached Guam in the Mariana Islands. They then continued their journey to the Philippines, where Magellan was killed in a battle with local warriors on April 27, 1521. The rest of the expedition, led by Juan Sebastián Elcano, continued on to the Moluccas, where they loaded their ships with spices. They then sailed back to Spain, arriving in September 1522. The expedition was a success, as it proved that it was possible to sail from Europe to Asia by sailing west across the Pacific Ocean.
