Los Angeles to American Samoa: 4,900 Miles Across the Pacific

You can't drive there. No bridge, no ferry, no coastal highway connects Los Angeles to American Samoa—just 4,900 miles (7,900 km) of open Pacific Ocean.

The only practical route is by air. Hawaiian Airlines operates the sole scheduled service: Honolulu (HNL) → Pago Pago (PPG), 2x weekly, ~5.5 hours. From LAX, you'll connect through HNL (5.5 hrs) for a total journey of 11–15 hours including layovers. No direct LAX–PPG flights exist.

American Samoa (pop. ~45,000) is an unincorporated U.S. territory—U.S. nationals, not citizens by birth. It's 2,600 miles southwest of Honolulu, 23° south of the equator. The International Date Line jogs east around it, so it's 24 hours behind the U.S. West Coast (25 in DST).

For cargo: Matson and Pasha Hawaii ship containers from Oakland/Long Beach to Pago Pago (~10–14 days). No passenger freighters.

Travel tip: Bring a U.S. passport (expedited entry), but a certified birth certificate + government ID suffices for U.S. nationals. No visa needed. Pack light—inter-island flights (to Manu'a) have strict weight limits.
