The Proper Way to Wear a Hawaiian Lei

The lei is a symbol of hospitality that dates back to the early 1900s. Visitors to the Hawaiian Islands would toss their leis into the ocean as their ships left. This was to signify their intention to return to this peaceful, hospitable paradise. Wearing a lei comes with few rules, and the traditions behind the lei run deep.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the middle of the lei over your shoulders. Allow it to hang down both in the front and in the back. Do wear it pulled forward like a necklace.

    • 2

Accept a lei if one is offered to you. The lei is a sign of friendship, and refusing the gift is seen as disrespectful of the gift giver.

    • 3

Leave the lei on your neck as long as you are in the company of your host. Removing it while still at a gathering or in the presence of the one who gave it to you is considered rude.
