How to Wear a Lavalava

A lavalava is a colorful wrap that closely resembles a sarong, and it features prominently in both male and female dress in Polynesian culture. The lavalava looks like a long scarf when laid flat, but its large size allows you to wear it as a modest, comfortable and airy garment. This native dress has become popular among Western travellers as relaxing beachwear or a swimsuit cover-up. Its versatility makes it an important part of business attire, casual dress and formal wear in Polynesian communities.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear the lavalava just below your waistline. If you tie this garment too high, it will add bulk to your midsection because of the large bundle of fabric on its front.

    • 2

Tie the lavalava in front. The knot of the lavalava should fall in line with your navel. The drape of this garment typically cascades down the center.

    • 3

When tying the lavalava, gather up its length in your hand so the garment reaches a point just below the knees. Allow the lavalava to fall low on the calf for traditional female dress.

    • 4

Tuck each end of fabric that extends from the knot into the sides of the lavalava. Push each end into the waistline, rather than allowing them to fall beside the knot.

    • 5

Choose an appropriate top to accompany your lavalava. Pair it with a tie and suit jacket for business wear or a T-shirt for casual days.
