Why was Rhode Island called Island?

The official name of Rhode Island is "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". Its name is believed to have originated from the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, who sailed along the coast and named an island in Narragansett Bay "Roodt Eylandt" (Red Island) in 1614. The name later came to be used to refer to the entire colony.
