In North America, the coastal mountain ranges, such as the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades, block the flow of moist air from the ocean. This results in a rain shadow effect, which creates a drier climate in the interior of the continent. In Europe, the coastal mountain ranges are not as high, and they do not block the flow of moist air from the ocean as effectively. This allows the marine west coast climate to penetrate further inland.
As a result of these factors, marine west coast climates are much more widespread in western Europe than they are in North America.
